About Window Regulator Mechanisms
The Jeep window regulator mechanism is the device which allows the person sitting in the car to open and close the window next to them.
Concealed behind the door panel, the window regulator mechanism is either manual or electric. Manual window regulator mechanisms are operated by a handle on the side panel of the door beneath the window. This handle is connected to the winder mechanism, and when the handle is turned by hand this causes the window regulator mechanism to wind or unwind the window accordingly, with the rotation of the handle. When the handle is turned the cable it's connected to is wound around a spool attached to a gear mechanism which winds the window up or down. Electric window regulator mechanisms are powered by a motor which is activated by a switch within easy reach of the driver, usually found on the dashboard, arm rest or door panel. All electric windows in the car can be controlled by the driver's controls but individual windows will usually have a switch to operate them individually too. The glass in car windows is held in place when the window opens or closes by track assemblies which assists with the smooth operation of the window.
If the Jeep window regulator mechanism is damaged the mechanism won't work properly and the window will move slowly and judder, or simply stop working and get jammed open or shut. When buying a replacement window regulator mechanism it is important to make sure you choose the right Jeep window regulator mechanism so it will fit the make and model of your car.
Jeep trivia
- Nobody knows where the name 'Jeep' comes from or why it was used. One theory is that it's a play on the phrase General Purpose Vehicle (GP), while others maintain that Jeeps are named after a character in the Popeye cartoon, Eugene the Jeep.
- The original Jeep was designed in only two days! The prototype took 75 days to be built and then delivered to the US army that had commissioned the vehicle.
- One of the most expensive Jeeps in the world is the 2005 Jeep Hurricane. It's certainly not a cheap option if you're in the market for a Jeep unless, of course, you've got a spare £2 million in the bank.
- People that own a Jeep are very keen to show it off. In 2015, research was carried out that showed Jeep is the second most popular car brand to see on Instagram. The Marque is the most popular Jeep model on social media. While this is a surprise when you consider the bigger names in car manufacturing, the fact that Jeeps can become such an integral part of the travel experience may go some way to explain the Instagram popularity.
- Jeeps have a distinctive flat slotted grill, but it's actually Ford that designed this part. Originally, the grill consisted of 13 slots, but by 1945 the number had dropped to seven.
