About Steering Rack Bootss

A steering rack forms part of the commonly used rack and pinion steering system.  A rack and pinion is a type of linear actuator that consists of a coupling of gears which combine to translate rotational motion into linear motion. The pinion is a circular gear that works in conjunction with a set of teeth on the rack, which is a linear gear. When the pinion is caused to rotate by the movement of the steering wheel this forces the rack to move relative to the pinion, which has the effect of converting the rotational movement of the pinion into linear movement that results in changing the angle of the wheels.

It is important that the mechanism of the steering rack is kept clean, dry and effectively lubricated. This is achieved by encasing the end of the rack in Land Roversteering rack boots. Also known as steering rack gaiters, Land Roversteering rack boots are made from rubber and are flexible and waterproof. They are designed to keep out water and dirt and keep the essential lubricant in. If water or dirt is allowed to infiltrate the Land Roversteering rack boots or lubricant is allowed to escape it will result in wear and, ultimately, the need to replace the entire rack. It is important, therefore, if there is any sign of a problem with a vehicle’s Land Roversteering rack boots, that replacements are fitted without delay.

Land Rover trivia

  • Land Rover was the two-decade standout winner of the Camel Trophy, a gruelling off-road challenge that sees vehicles compete in Siberia, the Sahara, Australia, and other hostile terrains.
  • The designer Charles S. King worked with Rolls Royce to design jet engines before going on to build the Range Rover. King would go onto building a car around those jet engines that then held the world land speed record, the first turbine-powered vehicle to do so.
  • One of the most unique vehicles ever was the floating SUV designed and built by Land Rover. Unfortunately, the Floating Ninety Defender led many drivers to believe that their own Land Rovers could also float, and many cars were driven into lakes as a result.
  • Inspired by the Jeeps that had been used in WWII, the first Land Rover's steering wheel was in the middle of the dashboard. This was partly to counter the need to create left and right-hand drive models for different countries.
  • Most cars get an immediate redesign after the prototype is designed. Not with the Range Rover, however! The 1966 design was considered perfect as it was, which never happens in the automotive industry. The Range Rover is considered a work of art, and one of them is even on display in the Louvre.
