About Wheel Hub Carriers

A Mercedes-Benz wheel hub carrier is mounted to the suspension and steering system and as its name suggests it holds or carries the hub assembly. The hub carrier is able to move up and down with the suspension, and also to move left and right allowing the front wheels to steer via movement of the steering gear.

The hub carrier is generally attached to the suspension using ball joints which allow it to move up and down freely as the car travels over the ground. The steering gear is linked to the carrier with a steering arm, also connected using ball joints to allow flexibility as the suspension moves up and down.

A Mercedes-Benz wheel hub carrier is cast piece of solid metal so generally very strong and robust, and as it has no moving parts is generally very reliable. However, a light impact such as hitting a curb can bend or deform the carrier, causing misalignment of the wheel hub assembly.

Additionally the connecting ball joints for the suspension and steering are prone to wear and will likely need to be replaced over time.

Mercedes-Benz trivia

  • In 1924, Mercedes Benz became the first car manufacturer to include brakes on all four of a car's wheels. Not long after, in 1931, they also added suspension springs to the corners of the Mercedes Benz 170.
  • Mercedes Benz cars have always been a big part of the Jurassic Park films, but the first movie went all out, with the stars emerging from a red Mercedes GLE Coupe before walking down the red carpet. Mercedes cars are also used throughout the film franchise.
  • The longest sedan vehicle available in today's car market is the S-Class Pullman, at a mind-boggling 6.5 metres long. Bear in mind that the average length of a sedan is only 4.7 metres!
  • Mercedes are responsible for a lot of 'firsts' in their long history, including the world's first production of a diesel car. Very impressive, but it only had three wheels. Production stopped pretty quickly in the late 1950s.
  • The Popemobile is a Mercedes Benz M-Class SUV. It's not a standard model, however, and has some added features like an inbuilt oxygen system and bulletproof glass.
